Differences Between British English VS American English

Before we take a look at some of the differences between the two main types of English.
I’d like to stress that these differences are somewhat minor and with the ongoing internationalization of our modern world they could even said to be diminishing. The few differences that exist between British and American English tend rather to enrich communication than slow it down.Let me give you an example to show you why American English has a stronger impact on British English than vice versa. When you go to the UK and switch on the TV you will see a lot of American shows, movies and films which, of course, are shown in the original, American version. Thus, especially young people watchingTV will learn a lot of American vocabulary and phrases which they easilyinternalize and use as their own. It follows, modern British English is much more likely to be influenced by American English than the other way round because when you live in the US and watch TV you rarely will see a British show or film.Another area where US English dominates is international business. Most globally operating companies are based in the US and hence the influence of American English terminology is very strong. However, as with any issue, the more you think about it, the more variations you will encounter and it would be impossible to cover them all in one article.

That’s why we’ll move on now to the differences between British and American English. Instead of giving you a comprehensive rundown of all imaginable items I’ll limitmyself to a small selection of my personal observations.

Spelling :When it comes to different spellings there isn’t really that much to say because in the near future the world will more or less agree on one uniform version.British English has a tendency to keep the spelling of many words of French origin whereas Americans try to spell more closely to the way they pronounce words and they remove letters not needed, which makes sense to me.Here are the examples:

British English
centre
theatre
realise
catalogue
programe
travel
neighbour
grey
plough

American English
center
theater
realize
catalog
program
traveled
neighbor
gray
plow

Again, these are in my opinion examples for the most important spelling differences between British and American English

B'COZ U LOVE ME

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come trueFor all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful babyYou’re the one who held me up
Never let me fallYou’re the one who saw me through through it all
You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speakYou were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in meLifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believedI’m everything I am
Because you loved me
You gave me wings and made me flyYou touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to meYou said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tallI had your love I had it allI
’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much
But I know this much is trueI was blessed because I was loved by you
You were my strength when I was weakYou were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t seeYou saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believedI’m everything I am
Because you loved me
You were always there for meThe tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You’ve been my inspirationThrough the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you
You were my strength when I was weakYou were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t seeYou saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believedI’m everything I am
Because you loved me
I’m everything I amBecause you loved me

ALCOHOLISM

Alcoholism is a term with multiple and sometimes conflicting definitions.
In common and historic usage, alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic baverage despite health problems and negative social consequences. Modern medical definitionsdescribe alcoholism as a
disease and addiction which results in a persistent use of alcohol despite negative consequences. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, alcoholism, also referred to as dipsomania described a preoccupation with, or compulsion toward the consumption of, alcohol and/or an impaired ability to recognize the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption.
Although not all of these definitions specify current and on-going use of alcohol as a qualifier for alcoholism, some do, as well as remarking on the long-term effects of consistent, heavy alcohol use, including
dependence and symptoms of withdrawal.
While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. It is estimated that 9% of the general population is predisposed to alcoholism based on genetic factors. The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. In addition, although the biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, some risk factors, including
social environment, stress, emotional health, genetic predisposition, age, and gender have been identified. For example, those who consume alcohol at an early age, by age 16 or younger, are at a higher risk of alcohol dependence or abuse. Also, studies indicate that the proportion of men with alcohol dependence are higher than that of the proportion of women, 7% and 2.5% respectively, although women are more vulnerable to long-term consequences of alcoholism. Around 90% of adults in United States consume alcohol and more than 700,000 of them are treated daily for alcoholism

So,how does one reach the stage of being considered successful in life?
As you will be entering the adult working world,I hope one some tips on how to be successful people will be helpful.Firstly,to be successful you must be focused and know yourseif.Examine what you enjoy doing most, the talents or skill you have and work hard at whatever is meaningful to you.Tailor these to the courses you will be taking in college with the career you intend to follow.Gel them together and work out a winning formula.
